![]() ![]() So the learning curve is there, but it's minimal. ![]() Nothing is as easy as plugging into a vintage valve amp and getting on with it, but the flipside of versatility and functionality is the need to understand how to configure stuff the way you want it. Certainly more than I originally thought. I've had some reservations about the tone studio software early on, and I wasn't super thrilled with 'yet another setup tool' (yast) but persevering with it does provide it's benefits. Then you really don't need anything other than your guitar and cable. So for anyone considering a Katana, you absolutely should buy the foot controller and get yourself an expression pedal to use with it as well. ![]() Having said that, without the GA-FC and an expression pedal, It's 'versatility' is somewhat restricted. Less bulk, great sound and certainly excellent features. Originally I said I'd wished I'd sprung for the 2x12 katana 100, but after 12 months I think the decision made was the correct one. The KatanaFxFloorBoard editor will be supported long after the Tone Studio version is gone, even the 25 year old GT is still actively supported by FxFloorBoard. And no, it doesn't sound like my 65 twin reverb, or my marshall 4x12, but it does try to emulate the JC-120 and can pass for it at much lower volume settings than the JC could ever hope to manage. It's been a perfect travel companion as well. I have enough 2x12 combos and 4x12's and heads, so the katana absolutely has not been disappointing in any way. Part of me wishes I'd waited a month or three for the 2x12 katana artist, but in reality there is no need. Set it up early on with all the presets that we wanted, and it's literally been plug and play for 12 months with very little tweaking or changing the tone studio presets that we initially programmed. I ended up buying another one recently and I love it because nothing else worked as seamlessly as the Powercab - they really are made for each other and it shows in the final result.Almost 12 months now since pulling the trigger on the K100 1x12 and still love it for the plug-in and go sounds. I actually bought a Powercab Plus years ago from GC but returned it at the time. ![]() With anything I recommend buying from a local GC or even Sweetwater (whenever possible) so you can return things you don’t like. There’s also a YouTube video from 5 Watt World where the guy talks specifically about what makes the Powercab such a great match for the HX stomp specifically - you may find his opinions valuable. I saw a video of Pete Thorn trying out the Headrush FRFR’s and he didn’t seem to have many negative things to say but I don’t have any direct experience with them. If I recall correctly, however, the Katana 50 doesn’t have an effects loop so you could try just running a preamp block into the front of the katana on a clean channel (not the acoustic setting) if you haven’t yet and you might get lucky.Īs far as FRFR’s go I’ve found that my preference always comes back to the Powercab Plus, which I know isn’t the most budget friendly option but to my ears it just sounds “right” and I spend more time playing and less time tweaking my gear. Worthy of note was that this did not work equally well for every preamp block - some sounded great and others were less than desirable. Certainly not perfect, but that amp in the room sound was definitely there. The end result was pretty impressive in my opinion. The reason for this was I read somewhere that the Katana actually tried to model an E元4 power section. I disabled all cab sims in the helix and only used preamp models. I used to run my Helix into the effects loop in of my Boss Katana 100. ![]()
